Aren't we Smart?

Aren't we a smart country? The Norwegians think so. If we get the Nobel prize for literature (Cormac McCarthy or Dellilo could do it, and there's a number of others) and then the Nobel Peace Prize... we'd sweep the awards. That's bigger than Romania winning the most Olympic medals per capita! (not to mention the most Olympic Medals per pound too... all those little gymnists.)

But who's going to win the Peace Prize? What if the Norwegians give us all the awards except the Peace Prize. Is it a form of protest? Does it say, "How does a coutnry so smart mess up the Mesopotamia so badly?" Does it say, "Even though we have a lot of peaceful people here, Cheney out weighs them all."

But what if we don't win the Nobel Prize for Literature? Have you considered what this will mean? It might say, "You are really good at all those practical sciences, all those highly technical pursuits (even though your kids don't do well at them in school, and most young Americans would rather be a rapper than a Chemist, a football player than an economist, a UPS driver than a physicist), but maybe you should stop, relax a minute, read a book, take a break, get some soft science done, think about life... not how it began... you Americans proved that the big Bang took Place, we Norwegians gave you the Prize for that, and for that we commend you, but maybe you should think about why so many Americans think the world started even after the first Chinese civilization/dynasty began recording history."

I agree. I think he's short listed. And he himself feels as though he deserves it. That's why he's turned a new page and written his new non-fiction book. He's such a genius!

But some suspect that he might join the ranks of Sartre and reject his award. Only he will reject it because he doesn't like the French... and that tells you how much John Grisham knows.

I have to hand it to him ... he has figured out how to make lots of money by writting and there is something to be said for that. He just keeps giving the sugar water to the masses ...

Boy, I can finally agree with something you-all write about. John Grisham....books too difficult to read and book jackets and titles too similar so I get them all mixed up and can never tell the ones I want to read from the ones I already read... :(

I really must apologize to the Norwegians amongst us. I accused them of tendering the Nobel Prize. Nobel was not descendant of the Vikings. No matter how terrific his invention, it was not extracted from the the genes of the vikings. It is a Swedish prize. I forgot. And my apology is directed at the sudden inflation of the Norwegian's ego. No, the Prize is the Swedes' to weild.

And they made it political! A Turk! A Turk who expressed anti-turkishness; but even though, he was still congratulated by his government while demonstrations went on. I mean, when did a Turk ever win the Prize?

When Did a Serb ever win? Ivo Andrace. I know. I made a point of visiting his apartment when in Beograd. Despite people's opinion of my reading habbits, I did read Bridge on the Drina and Days of teh Consuls. I bought the English Trans at a little book store across the street from our hotel in Kikinda.

And Why do I mention this now, post-turkish-nobel-lit announcement? It's because Ivo studied the Turks intensely in Bridge on the Drina, and how the Yugoslavian states, Bosnia in particular, led to the first world war, all the way back from 1400.

Neither are Grisham!@%#@

But really, I'm sure someone was biting their tongue when I refered to the Nobel Prize as a Norwegian Prize.
