Brokeback Mountain......The Saga Continues
Jesse and I also mosied on over to our local cineplex this weekend to see what the hullabaloo surrounding Brokeback Mountain was all about.
There were a few things that intrigued me going in to the film. 1. I love westerns 2. I like love stories. So, that being said I liked this movie. I think you are right, Michelle, about in the end it being a small story. But I love that because I feel like that is very real. Most love stories aren't made up of hollywood but those day to day or year to year things that are difficult to pinpoint.
And that, set against a majestic background, like it was maybe was more metaphorical of finding great love than anything else.
I also really like the idea that people sometimes fall in love with other people and not just someone of the opposite sex. Jesse and I agree with you that this is what happened with Ennis. He never sought out any other male companion. It was just about Jack. Jack, however, I think was gay and probably knew it before he ended up on Brokeback Mountain that summer.
I had a friend years ago who I think would be considered bi-sexual but really she was just really not gender specific about who she loved in a romantic way, which always fascinated me.
Jesse commented about how he thought the transition from them being on the mountain getting to know each other and working together to being lovers was kind of a leap that he didn't buy.
I also thought it was just so interesting how they had these trips to the mountains that made them so happy, but it really didn't seem to diminish there feeling toward their spouses. Not that it didn't affect their marriages or entire lives but I think they both really loved their families.
I agree that it should have been more tightly edited and I think there was a real question for the filmmakers about how to end the movie. I was wondering during the last scene with Ennis' daughter whether we were going to have an hour more to go to see how her marriage went.
I thought Heath Ledger was really great and all the acting was good. I don't know why they went blonde with Anne Hathaway's hair through the years but maybe that was the rage.
